How to Troubleshoot a Check Engine Light on the 2001 Subaru Impreza 1Open the fuse-panel cover under the steering column by pulling down on it with your fingers.2Locate the OBD port for the left of the key fuse panel. This may be a port that accommodates the OBD scan tool plug.3Plug the OBD scan tool in to the access port and turn on the scan tool.4Turn on the ignition, but do not begin the engine.5Wait for the display on the scan tool to read "OK ">Auto diagnostic tools," and then shut off the ignition and unplug the scan tool from the access port.6Read the codes you've just retrieved by accessing the menu on your scan tool. Normally, there is a "Menu" button right on the tool for this. Scroll through the menu options until you come towards the "Stored Codes" option.
